Programs Offered
Bioblitz - Biological Inventory
2 Hour Outdoor Program This program explores the concept of biodiversity in an ecosystem with hands-on activities, explorations, and discussion on scientific data collection. Students will do collecting and counting of all the animal species they find in both meadow lands and a river set back.
Our Geologic History
1 Hour Program Learn about the movement of the earth’s crust and how these monumental events shaped our current New England landscape. Were there really mountains here that once rivaled the Himalayans? Is New Hampshire really a part of ancient Africa? Find out through hands on activities, slides and discussion.
Geologic History Field Trip
2 Hour Outdoor Field TripOffered Spring, Summer & Fall
Explore evidence of the shaping of our landscape. We will tour local sites (from Bellows Falls to Saxtons River) that highlight what was once ancient Africa, the ocean bottom that laid beneath a precursor to the Atlantic Ocean, the remnants of post glacial Lake Hitchcock, and finally settle on the ancient North American plate.
Introduction to Nature Journaling
1 1⁄2 Hour Outdoor Program
All Seasons Nature Journaling enhances your students’ natural curiosity and observation skills while giving them an opportunity to practice drawing and writing. We will delve into the history and uses of nature journaling and then write and draw using nature as our muse. This program can serve as an introduction to your own nature journaling unit or you can work with us in a multi-visit format. We can tailor this program to fit into your classroom’s theme.
Orienteering
Two Part Program
(Total 2 1/2 Hours) Offered Spring, Summer & Fall
Part I: Intro to Compasses
1 Hour Indoor Program
Students learn the fundamentals of compass work that they will need to successfully complete an outdoor orienteering course. Topics covered in this program include the parts of a compass, how to read a compass, directions, and pacing.
Part II: Orienteering Course
1 1/2 Hour Outdoor Program (only at The Nature Museum)
Using their skills with a compass, students will challenge themselves to complete a orienteering course that leads them on a journey through the forest.
Plate Tectonics
1 Hour Program Learn about this relatively new geological theory and how it has transformed our view and understanding of some of the Earth’s crustal development. Using hands-on activities and slides, we will discuss plate movement and highlight examples from around the world.
Vernal Pools
1 Hour Program Offered in Spring
Temporary spring ponds are much more than giant mud puddles. They are the “hatcheries of the forest,” providing an important start for many species of animals. Through a slide show and hands-on activities we will explore these important ecological zones and the adaptations of animals who live in these fleeting wet spots.
